| Western Subterranean Termite
Size: Western subterranean termite swarmers are about 3/8 in (9mm) long, including wings. Found in the Western states, from British Columbia south to western Mexico and east to Idaho and Nevada.
Location: Colonies are usually in the ground, below the frost line, and above the water table and rock. Mud tubes are built to reach food sources. Secondary colonies can exist above ground if a moisture source, such as leaky pipes, is present. After swarming, a pair constructs a cavity, mates within one day of excavating, and the female lays an average of 10 eggs, which hatch in about 50 days. There can be as many as 7 instars, development taking over 5 months, and workers living 3-5 years. Swarmers are produced the 3rd or 4th year at the earliest.
