Luckily, most of us have never had to live around really, really big bed bug problems. Bed bugs were very prevalent before the 1940s and 1950s when they seemed to be everywhere. But in the 1950s, DEET was born, and that turned the world around for bed bugs, wiping out major infestations in high volumes. Unfortunately the problem is back, and more and more states are seeing a rise in bed bugs. And, it’s not just the United States that’s being affected by the rise in bed bugs. Areas such as Britain and Africa are also experiencing an increase, indicating that bed bugs are becoming a problem around the globe and leaving some pest control companies even saying that the problem is on the verge of becoming a pandemic.
One only has to look at the statistics to realize that bed bugs are very much on the rise. The National Pest Management Association recently partnered with the University of Kentucky to publish the 2010 Comprehensive Global Bed Bug Study. This study questioned 1000 pest control companies about the bed bug calls they were getting on average before the bugs became so prevalent, and what they’re like now. On average, most companies said that before the year 2000, about 25% of their calls would be regarding bed bug problems. Today however, those same pest control companies are seeing about 95% of their calls being in regards to bed bugs.
So why are bed bugs becoming so prevalent?
One reason for the increase in bed bugs, experts say, is because people are traveling now more than ever before. Bed bugs go from a bed or a piece of furniture in one country, get into the luggage that’s in the room, and then come home with that person, going on to infest their home. The problem then grows from there. And with so many people traveling to many different places, and coming back home to many different places, bed bugs can end up just about anywhere.
The bigger reason for the increase in bed bugs seems to be because they are becoming extremely resistant to pyrethoid insecticides. In fact, bed bugs are becoming so prevalent that pest control companies are finding that they now have to use 1,000 times the concentration they normally use when dealing with bed bugs.
Bed bugs are here, and they may be around to stay for awhile. They are also known as being incredibly hard pests to get rid of. Drastically increasing the temperature of your home to an unbearable heat and leaving it that way for two to three days while you stay somewhere else is one of the most common methods of getting rid of bed bugs in the home.
