African or Africanized honey bees are a variety of honey bees that is slowly moving into California. The most common type of bee in California is the European honey bee. This non-aggressive bee has been used throughout the United States to pollinate our fruit, nut, and olive trees, along with beautiful flowers and shrubs.

Unfortunately, the African honey bee was introduced into South America in an effort to produce a strain of higher producing honey bees. These African bees thrived in South America. As the African bees mated with the traditional European bees, they produced a new subspecies of bees – the Africanized honey bee.

The Africanized honey bee is a far more aggressive bee variety than the traditional European bee. This bee will diligently defend its nest with the only tool available to them – their sting. Africanized bees are disturbed by people entering their environment and consider their environment to extend at least 50 feet away from their hive. They will respond by stinging multiple times and in large masses.

The Africanized bee is moving up through South America and is increasingly being sighted throughout Southern California. Africanized bees are quite a bit larger than their European counterparts. The Africanized bee will measure up to ¾” in length. If you suspect that you have Africanized bees around your home, their hive should be removed, or sprayed to kill the bees. We will inspect your home to determine if the bee variety is, in fact, the Africanized bee, remove the hive and inspect your home to determine whether you have any holes that allow the bees to come into the home.
