Why Worry About Rodents?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Rodents—particularly rats and mice—are among the most common household pests.  But they deserve special attention because they bring with them a unique set of problems.

For one thing, they are known to carry and transmit a wide range of infectious diseases that can threaten the health and wellness of your family.  Another concern is how quickly these critters can reproduce.  Just two mice can produce up to 200 offspring in four months!  Rodents are also quite intelligent, which makes them difficult to catch or trap.  They even have the ability to extract bait from the traps without setting them off.  Furthermore, rodents can contaminate the food and any surface they come into contact with, which means even when they are not around you can still contract diseases from their nocturnal visits.

As with most pest control, the best way to control rodents is by taking preventative measures.  Since they often come in to your home searching for food, it is essential that you keep food sealed up and dishes washed.  You can also make sure there are no entry points around the outside of your house where small creatures can get inside.

Keep an eye out for tell-tale signs of rodents, even if you haven’t seen them in the flesh.  Rodent droppings, foot prints in the dirt or dust, chew marks around baseboards or grates, and even noises inside the walls or ceilings.

Don’t hesitate to address a rodent problem.  If you suspect rodents in your home, you should contact a professional pest control service like Accuracy Plus California.  With years of experience, we can help identify the extent of the problem and make recommendations for controlling the problem now and in the future.  For a free Los Angles pest control inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to www.accuracypluscalifornia.com.

April Showers Bring…More Pests?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The wet, rainy spring showers that we’re experiencing this spring may be a blessing for your garden, but they can also inspire pests to seek a dry haven in your home.  Rodents, beetles, hornets and bees, spiders, rickets, cockroaches and ants are all common outdoor vermin that will move in and get comfortable when the weather turns wet.  Additionally, the increase in moisture outside provides insects with flourishing food sources and the water they need to reproduce or expand their colonies.

As the weather changes it’s a good idea to review your pest control procedures and preventions to make sure you are ready to meet the challenges of the coming season.  Make sure you have done a complete examination of the perimeter of your house and checked for entry points including grates, windows and other spots where wear and tear may have made it easy for curious critters to get inside your walls, floors and attic.  Look for anything that looks out of place such as scratch marks, droppings, or prints in the dirt.

You’ll also want to talk to a professional pest control service about setting traps or baits if you have a history of infestations.  Pest control professionals can sit down with you and give you a complete picture of what to look out for and which specific pests are in your area.  They can help you get rid of existing pests, and set up a system for pest prevention which changes with the seasons.

Prevention is always the best way to solve a pest problem.  Home owners can rely on companies like Accuracy Plus California to keep their property pest-free despite the changes throughout the year.   Their experience and specialized equipment will end up saving you money and time in the long run. For a free Los Angles pest control inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to www.accuracypluscalifornia.com.

Bees!

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Bees are one of the most beneficial species of insects for humankind.  Not only do they ensure the annual blooming of important plants and flowers, but they make honey and wax which we use for everything from food to cosmetics. However, bees aren’t always the most welcome addition to your property.   Despite their usefulness bees can also be dangerous, particularly to children and pets that inadvertently disturb them.  They can also be a serious health threat to people who have allergic reactions to bee stings.

Since bees are social creatures, they often live in large colonies which can survive for years.  If you see them around in a specific area, you can assume there is a hive containing several hundred to a thousand of these critters somewhere close by.

Other insects related to common honey bees include wasps and hornets, both of which are substantially dangerous and can be highly aggressive, especially if provoked.  This makes removing them en masse a risky proposition, and not something that is recommended to the average homeowner. Professional pest control services have both experience and specialized tools which help them to remove these colonies.

Bees, wasps and hornets can build their nests indoors or out.  It is not unheard of for bees to chew through soft wall structures and set up shop within.  Signs that you have bees in your walls include hearing noise, dead bees, shed skins and pieces of wax combs scattered about.   Once they are removed you should seal up the entrance and check the rest of the perimeter of your home to make sure there are not other entry points.

Unless you’ve been trained in handling bees, it is best to call a pest control services like Accuracy Plus California.  These professionals can help you get rid of your bee colony and advise you on the best ways to prevent any future reoccurrence.  For a free Los Angles pest control inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to www.accuracypluscalifornia.com.

Subterranean Termites

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

One of the most destructive pests in the U.S. is subterranean termites.  While they have their place in the natural world, they cause approximately $2 billion of damage to developed property each year.  Subterranean termites can be hard to identify because they stay hidden behind walls, under floors and other out-of-the-way spots.

Subterranean termites are named so because they build their nests in the soil.  Inside the colony are three types of members: soldiers, workers and reproductives.  Each of these types dedicates their entire lives to fulfilling their purpose within the community, but it is the workers which are responsible for consuming the precious wood structure of your home or deck.

Colonies can range in size depending on the location, climate, and availability of food.  Workers are attracted by the scent of decaying wood so if you live in a damp part of the country or have piles of wood in your yard that are constantly exposed to the elements, you may be running a higher risk of infestation.

Because subterranean termites require constant protection, they will build tubes out of the soil and create a sort of highway they can travel to and from a food source in. One of the easiest ways to diagnose an infestation, therefore, is visually sighting these raised tubes in the soil around your property. Also, due to their extremely private nature, any visual sighting of actual termites is an almost sure sign of a larger infestation.  (You should not hesitate to call a pest control professional immediately in this case.)

One of the best ways to prevent subterranean termites is by maintaining your property and keeping it free of debris.  You can also stay on top of any structural repairs that need to be done on your home’s exterior, including removing any wood-to-soil contact points. Make sure the soil on your property is properly drained, and can dry out thoroughly after a rain shower.

Subterranean termites can be terrifying for a homeowner, affecting the value of the property and calling for extensive repairs.  If you have any reason to believe these creatures are on your property, call a professional pest control service immediately to find out for sure, and learn what can be done to protect your investment now and in the future.  For a free Los Angles pest control inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to www.accuracypluscalifornia.com.

Termites: Early Detection Is the Key

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Home owners live in fear of the dreaded termite.  Not only do they cause damage to your home’s structural integrity, but they can affect the resale value of your home.  But termites don’t have to be a death knoll for a house.  It is easy to spot them even in their early stages of colonizing, and then you can remediate them quickly and effectively.

What should you look for when it comes to termites on your property?  Obviously if you see a termite you need to call out a pest control service immediately.  But not all termites are visible.  That’s why you should regularly walk around and inspect your property.  Grab a flashlight and look through your basement, or in areas of your property where there are wood piles and other debris.  If you see “tubes” in the dirt, you’ll know that termites are building pathways to carry food to and from their nests.

You may also find wood shavings or droppings around areas of your home inside or outside.  Look for any worn or disintegrating wood that is on the exterior of your home, and inside tap along your walls, floors and ceiling to listen for hollow wood that may be eaten from the inside out.

The moment you suspect termites on your property, call a professional pest control service.  These little critters work fast and they can cause serious (and costly) damage to your home.  A professional pest control service can not only remove existing termites, they can advise you on the best way to prevent a re-infestation.

Your home is not only a valuable investment but it is a source of pride.  Take the best possible care of it by being alert to possible termite infestations.  Remember, the earlier you can detect termites, the easier it will be to get rid of them for good.  For a free Los Angles pest control inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to www.accuracypluscalifornia.com.
