A Guide to Mosquitoes and Prevention

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Mosquitoes rank as one of the most annoying insects around. Not only are their bites mildly painful and itchy, but they can spread dangerous disease and viruses.  The West Nile Virus is a dangerous virus that is slowly gaining a foothold in the United States – and how is West Nile spread? Mosquitoes.

How do you control mosquitoes? The best way is to look for the environmental factors that are appealing to mosquitoes and eliminate them. Mosquitoes look for still water to lay their nests. In urban areas, that can mean something as simple as a puddle from a garden hose, a bird bath, a swimming pool, or any other water container.

Get rid of standing water, and you help make it difficult for mosquitoes to breed around your home. But that won’t completely eliminate the mosquitoes. You’ll still have mosquitoes coming around, from other nearby homes and properties.

You can fight off the mosquitoes with natural repellants, such as citronella candles, mosquito traps, and electrical zappers. A good inspection of all of your window screens will show possible entry points into your home. You also need to take a look at the areas under your home.  Water from leaky pipes that pool in your basement or crawl space can be a great breeding ground for mosquitoes.

We’ll check your home for access points that allow mosquitoes in and offer you solutions to get rid of these noxious creatures. There’s no reason that you have to put up with the annoyance or disruption of mosquitoes in your life. Mattress Covers – Why Use Them?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

This may seem a little strange. Here’s a company that is in the business of pest control recommending something not related to pest control methods to get rid of bugs and allergens. What’s up with that?

Our experience in pest control has provided us with a thorough understanding of household pests and insects and the affect they have on people’s lives. There are lots of pest and allergens that share beds, and can cause bites and sickness. If there were a way to make people’s lives better, we want to talk about it.

A good mattress cover will protect your mattress from infestation of bed bugs, dust mites and other pests. Best of all a mattress cover is far easier to clean and maintain than a mattress – try putting your mattress in the washer and dryer!

You can prevent the effects of bugs in your bed with a mattress cover, but you also have to eliminate the pests from getting around your bed. That’s where we come in. Even when pests can’t penetrate your mattress, they can live healthy lives around your bed, headboard, in chairs and tables that are nearby. To get rid of these pests, you have to treat the pest first, then cover the mattress.

This way you get rid of pests at the source and prevent them from doing any additional damage to your home, mattress or you. Good pest control is a combination of treatment and prevention. For a free inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to http://www.accuracypluscalifornia.com/.

How Does Pest Control Affect My Family?

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

There are lots of ways to get rid of unwanted pests and insects. Many of them will kill off any pests – with harmful chemicals. While it’s essential to get rid of pests and insects, do you really want to spray a lot of chemicals in and around your own that could be damaging your family’s or pets health?

Well, not all pest control is the same. We tend to think of all chemical pest control as being the noxious and environmental disaster of the late ‘60s and ‘70s. But pest control has come a long way since those days. Sure, we still have some chemicals that are poisons, but there are just as many specialized chemicals that effectively get rid of pests.

Some chemicals used with pest control are synthetic forms of chemicals, like DDT. These chemicals offer the benefits of getting rid of pests, without the toxicity of the original compound. Sometimes, we use chemicals derived from nature – Orange Oils or other oil compounds that pest find noxious.

Are goal is to find a solution that is safe for you and your family, but also gets rid of the pests in and around your home. A thorough inspection can cover a lot of options – sometimes we’ll find that the best way to eliminate pests is through prevention. We’ll show you areas of your home that may be inviting pests in.

Sometimes you have to balance pest control methods against the damage of the insects. As an example, cockroaches and mosquitoes can bring a variety of life-threatening bacteria and illness into your home. In these cases, you weigh the benefits of pest control against the dangers of the pests. Our company is committed to finding healthful solutions for families, while getting rid of the pests from a home.

Controlling Indoor Pests

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Despite your best efforts to keep your home clean, you may fight a battle with insects. Cockroaches, spiders, fleas and ants are all annoying insects that love to infest your home. These frustrating creatures bring in bacteria and illness, or bite you and your pets.

There are a lot of treatments to get rid of indoor pets. The first step really does involve a good cleaning. Pests like cockroaches will be attracted to food or grease – whether it’s simply a few crumbs on the counter or grease in your garbage disposal.

But even the most diligent housekeeping won’t get rid of all insects. Many insects enter the home through cracks and gaps in the foundation. Until the gaps and cracks are sealed, insects have free access to your home.

Sometimes, in the case of fleas, you have to take a more aggressive approach. Once fleas are in your home or infesting your pets, you have to treat both the pet and the home.  This requires the use of a chemical that will kill off the fleas and their larvae. In some cases, we can spray the home to get rid of the fleas, or heavy infestations may require fogging the entire home.

When combating indoor pests, we need to determine where the pests are, how they are gaining access to your home, and the best solution for getting rid of them and keeping them from coming back. There simply isn’t one solution for all – it depends on the type of insects and the infestation and your family’s needs.

The best solution is the one the works for you and keeps your home insect free. For a free inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to http://www.accuracypluscalifornia.com/.

Organic Pest Control – Keeping Cats, Dogs and Squirrels Out

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Whether you live in the city or the country, you face the problem of unwanted pests in your yard. It may be a neighborhood cat or dog, or squirrels that regularly visit your backyard.  Your faced with something of a dilemma – how to get rid of these visitors in a non-lethal way.

There are a couple of options that will keep visitors out of your yard. Each requires varying amounts of commitment on your part.

One option is to use a scent-based deterrent to repel animals. As an example, fox urine is a deterrent that most pests will avoid. If you use a scent based deterrent, you’ll have to reapply the compound after rain or on a regular basis.

Another option is to use a simple spray of water from a garden hose to discourage pests. A spray of water will annoy most animals, and if done repeatedly will provide a correlation between the water and your yard. Unfortunately, this requires a lot of work on your part.  You have to plan on being there every time a pest enters your yard. There are motion activated sprinkler systems that will drench pests as they enter your yard.

There are other options that are equally non-toxic. Our job is to find solutions that work for our clients – solutions that accommodate their comfort level, whether finding non-toxic solutions or others. We consult with our clients to find the best solution. For a free inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to http://www.accuracypluscalifornia.com/.

Problem pests? Or is the Problem Pesticides?

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

All pests are a problem, right? There are actually a lot of insects and bugs that are very helpful to the environment. The problem is that if you use pesticides to get rid of some noxious insects, you may be killing some of the helpful insects. You can also spray harmful chemicals that affect your pets.

That’s why it’s so important to have an integrated approach to pest control. With an integrated approach, we find out what pests are problematic, the best method for safely eliminating those pests, and how to protect your home, family and pets from further problems.

Good pest control uses a variety of methods for controlling insects in and around the home. For instance, there are some pests that can be controlled through natural methods. Using certain non-toxic chemicals, like household cleaners (Borax), vinegar/water solutions, or essential oils are all methods of disrupting the pests access to your home or food source.

Another option for outdoor use is to introduce beneficial insects or microbes into the environment that control pest populations. Some of these insects, such as spiders, are great at controlling insects outside, but you want to keep them outside, not in your home. This means you have to track down cracks and gaps in your foundation that allow pests to infiltrate your home.

Good pest control is more than merely spraying harmful chemicals around your home. It’s a combination of prevention and deterrent, with a careful eye for keeping a healthful balance and long-term solution for your home. Keep a Watch Out For Basement Insects

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Your basement or crawl space under your home is a great breeding ground for insects.  Most people seldom visit their basements or crawl spaces, and they become favorite storage areas. Unfortunately, those dark, deserted areas are favorite residences to all kinds of bugs and insects.

If you store your recycling bins in your basement, you may be attracting bugs into your home. Recycling bins are favorite locations for fruit flies, and other bugs that feed on rotted vegetables and garbage. If you are storing bottles, cans or jars that aren’t cleaned out, you could be inviting insects.

Cracks or gaps in your foundation provide a variety of insects with easy access to your home. Some insects, such as wood boring beetles, termites, and carpenter ants will tunnel into to the home in search of food – wood products. These insects can damage walls and wood work around the home.

The same cracks and gaps allow bees and wasps to get into the home. They can easily make nests in the basement, crawl space, even inside of the walls. Silverfish are small winged insects that love to feed off old books and clothing. Moths will also make a meal from any stored clothes in the basement or crawl space.

You can keep your basement and crawl space free from insects. Simply store clothes and other items in sealed plastic containers; keep recyclable in sealed garbage, wash out bottles and cans; and seal up cracks and gaps in foundation. Rats – Dangerous Carriers of Disease

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

We all realize that rats are a nuisance – they can do considerable damage around the home, chewing through wires, damaging wall, and furniture. But you may not have given much consideration to the dangers that are common with rats – they carry disease and illness into your home.

The problem with rats is that they carry disease and they carry fleas that transmit the diseases to pets and human. Although the rats become diseased, the fleas living off them don’t. They will continue to live on their host until the rat dies. Then they will bite humans or pests, and some of the infected blood from the rats is transmitted to their new hosts.

Once a person has been infected by disease, those diseases can easily be transmitted to other members of the family and then the community at large. That’s how the plague was transmitted during the middle ages, and decimated entire populations of cities and towns.

While our modern-day medical knowledge makes combating disease and illness easier, the best option is to get rid of the potential health problems is to get rid of rats and mice and keep them out of your home. Without access to your home, you protect yourself and your family from disease carried by rats. For a free inspection, give us a call at 888-675-0258 or go to http://www.accuracypluscalifornia.com/.
